Fraxinus - olive family

Liść jesionuThe next favourite of the wood industry is ash.
This is a hard wood used mainly for production
of floors, furniture, sporting equipment and ladder rungs.

Its characteristic trait is high colour variation.
Ash simply enchants with its rich spectrum
of colours – light colours alternate with attractive browns (from the hardened, middle part of the trunk).

Around 65 species of ash are known – in Poland the most common
of these are: Manna Ash, European Ash and its single-leaf variety.

Curiosities

  • The oldest and largest ash tree in Poland grows in Kashubia in the town of Motarzyno. Its age is 404 years, its circumference is 715 cm, and the diameter of its trunk is 227.5 cm.
  • The Manna Ash owes its name to the sap it emits from damaged shoots, which coagulates to form the so-called manna that has medicinal use (laxative properties).

Hardness on the Brinell scale: 39 MPa

Change of colour from exposure to sunlight: ash darkens subtly
with time, attaining as a result a straw yellow colour.

Density:
690 kg/m³

Installation over floor heating: possible
